What’s the best deck/setup to get for cruising around on a skateboard?
Posted by on 8th, 2010
In the city/suburbs? The only tricks I plan on doing are ollies to jump off/on curbs. Would a pro skateboard brand be good or a blank deck ordered online suffice as well?
Also, it seems that wheel size and the height of the trucks are the most important factor, which size would be best and what brand of trucks?
I eventually plan on getting a skateboard for tricks once I get more used to cruising.
trucks; independent high raw trucks
deck; blank
bearings; ninjas
wheels; spitfire 54mm
grip; jessup
hardware; diamond

I suggest that you get a 8.0 to 8.5 inch wide deck about 55-59mm wheel and independent or destructo trucks, and the deck what ever you like if you are willing to spend the money

The larger your wheels, the faster you go. The faster your bearings, the faster you go.
If you’re just cruising and ollieing (which you probably wont be just doing if u get hooked) you want big wheels. 54-59mm are good. By the time you start caring about tricks, you’re wheels will have wore down a little and you will have good sized wheels for trick skating. I recommend Spitfire or Hubba wheels. Harder wheels are faster, but you feel the terrain more. If you’re on a bumpy road, it will be a nuisance and you wont go as fast with hard wheels. Extra soft wheels will be slower, but make you feel like you’re riding a cloud.
I recommend you get Bones Reds bearings. They are fast bearings, and very cheap. They are as fast or faster as most 30$ bearings, but beat the price. Rush Bearings are good too.
For trucks, I recommend you get Destructo, Thunder, Independent, or Royals. The bushings on your trucks depend on how much they allow you to turn. After you skate them for a while, they break in. Then, they allow you to turn more. So any truck will probably do. Because you are getting big wheels, you don’t wanna get low trucks, or you’ll get wheel bite. This is where the wheel touches the deck while you’re turning, causing it to jerk to a stop and send you flying. So Medium sized trucks will work fine. If you do get wheel bite, you can get riser pads. They move the wheels farther from the deck. For a deck, an 8 inch deck would be fine, give or take a little. ATM blank decks are awesome starter decks, and cheap. But a pro skateboard brand would be fine. It doesn’t matter too much. And when you get used to cruising, you’ll have a fine skateboard for tricks. For grip tape, I recommend jessup or black magic. Its about preference though.
Good luck

I suggest atleast an 7.75-8 and maybe 53mm wheels so rocks dont trip you. Then maybe a local skateshop board would be fine. and when you get trucks, if your gonna cruise keep em loose..but not too losse.Bearings i suggest reds..but for faster more expensive ones get bone swiss
